OUGD505 // What is good // BBC Where Next

Over the weekend the BBC have launched a new advertising campaign about the history of the BBC. This is branding as Where next, there is a page within the BBC website all about it and basically it is about where the BBC are going to go next in the coming years.

The advertising promotion for this is a video clip which is played over the BBC channels and is a compilation of events which have happened since 1922 when the BBC was first launched, this includes the radio and TV events.

Also within the website for this section there is an interactive timeline of events that have happened within the BBC.

I think that this video is really interesting and could be incorporated into the exhibition in some way, maybe be a video played within the exhibition space or be a promotional video for the exhibition with some editing.

OUGD505 // What is Good // Wayfinding

The last area that i have researched into is the wayfinding of a exhibition. As part of my project this is something that i want to look at and i think it is apart of the identity of the exhibition. I would defiantly transfer the branding over this range of products throughout the wayfinding of the exhibition as it still displays the identity of the exhibition within it.

The research that i have conducted on this area is pretty wide in terms of the application of the wayfinding system and how it woud be used within the exhibition. There is a wide variety of ways that the system can be brought into the exhibition. If you look at the examples from the GFSmith exhibition, the wayfinding does become part of the exhibition and something that you would think is the exhibition but the purpose of it is the actual wayfinding system and showing the visitors the different areas and schedule of the days. I really like the floor plan of the exhibition on page 7, this i think is a great idea to include and makes the exhibition become more interactive my having this there to be seen, it think this is a much better way than just having it as a graphic on the wall, its much more tactile and engaging to the visitors.
I do like the simple formats of the wayfinding systems, the ones which just have the vinyls on the wall, but are broken up by colour of numbers or something similar, i dont want the wayfinding to be something which takes away from the exhibition itself, but yet i still want it to stand out and be clear and visible to the visitor. I think getting this balance right will be key.
I have defiantly seen that the vinyl approach to applying the wayfinding to the walls or simple signs hanging from the ceiling or being apart of the exhibition walls is the way in which i want to take this, because i want it be obvious and stand out that it is there, but also look as though it belongs there and sort of blend into the background so it doesnt take anything away from the exhibition itself. Getting this balance right will be key throughout the project.

OUGD505 // What is Good // Promotion

Promotion is the main part of this brief for me, I am focussing in on this because i want to experiment with printing techniques and formats throughout, so this is the best application to apply this to. Also the promotion comes into the whole branding of the exhibition too, which is another area i want concentrate on, so this basically brings everything together that i want to explore within the project.

When looking into the promotion side of things i wanted to research into products which would be relevant to what i would be able to create for the exhibition. So i have looked mainly at publications, invites, posters, binding techniques and information packs. I think these would be the basis of my promotion products and from that i would create more creative products too, i also thought it would be good to look into gift items and stationery for the museum too - on page 11, this shows stationery of the design museum, which i think looks really good and very aesthetically pleasing, the design of these is in keeping with the overall style of the museum, but i think it would be great to produce something like this too.
I have mainly researched into the actual products which the promotion would involve and not so much on the design of these. From looking at the research i can see the sort of products that i should be including in my promotion for the exhibition, but this also includes products that will be present around the exhibition too - like brochures and posters etc, but i still class this as promotion because it is about the museum.
I really like the format of the invites and tickets on pages 18-22. These invites and publication are from the barbican art gallery and are an interesting format, thy split down into three sections within the actual design and the format is based around this too. The three sections are there to provide a perforation within the print to include the ticket which would be ripped off the far side, but the rest of the design still includes the important information for the exhibition. I like the design style to these and the concept behind them with the perforation. Something interesting to think about.

OUGD505 // What is Good // Information

Another section of the exhibitions i have looked into is the actual exhibits itself and how an exhibition is laid out for the space and how an individual would walk around and see the exhibition. This isnt an area that i want to concentrate on for the project, but i do want to propose some of the artwork in which would be present within the exhibition, so researching into this is relavant and will provide me with the needed knowledge which may help me propose some of the content for the exhibition.

The images here show a wide collection of exhibition spaces and ways that the information within the exhibitions can be displayed. I want the exhibition to be very engaging and interactive to catch the attention of the teenagers and make them want to get involved with the exhibition, to achieve this i think i need to provide bold and simple graphics which explain the content of the exhibition well. The use of interactivity can play to my advantage by using computers, sound and vision within the exhibition, this would be a great way to inform the audience about the content and be something which will engage them too. The research that i have taken out shows alot of simple and bold exhibition spaces, i would want to mimic this and create a exhibition that has a lot of colour and simplistic artwork to inform the audience.

OUGD505 // What is good // Format

Another area which i have looked into is format, I want to create a more interesting format for the publications of the exhibition, this can also work in favour for the invites too. I want to get away from using the 'A' sizes as i think this restricts the design and is pretty boring. If i can use them in a more interesting way and produce a different format of a publication using 'A' sizes then this will bode well for the exhibition and hopefully make it more engaging to read.

From looking at the research images i have collected you can see that alot of the formats have actually come from an 'A' sized sheet, they have just been designed around these differently and cut down to a different sized format. Using a ratio within the size could be an interesting way to get away from the standard sizes and produce something more aesthetically pleasing. I like the idea of the folding brochures / concertina books, these work well to hold alot of information but can be any sort of size and fold down to a much smaller size, working across the concertina will create a bigger area to design within too. I also like the documents which have are made up of several publications all being different sizes, this breaks down the content of the publication well and makes it easier to read smaller chunk of information and actually take in the information as you arent overwhelmed by the amount of information in front of you. The different publications built up on top of each other also looks aesthetically pleasing and interesting too. Using coloured stock within theses documents looks good too - the green one for examples, that small insert of green stock makes the publication come to life and much more interesting to look at, the print is blak white white over the stock too, so the colour of it is always at the essence of the publication. With the other publications amongst it being black and white all three contrast each other well and creates an eye catching publication.

OUGD505 // What is good // Further Branding Research

After looking a little bit into exhibition branding and the range of products that you could produce for the branding of an exhibition, i wanted to look at this further and delve into the branding more. I wanted to focus more onto the actual branding of something and not so much on the product range this time.

I have collected a range of images which show a wide variety of branding, in various forms, these are all for different things and not necessarily for exhibition branding, but I have looked at that in more detail and will be discussed in a while.

This collection of images show a massive area of branding and how it has been tackled over a range of products. I think it is important to keep this in mind when designing a brand identity as it must work over the full range of products, also this range of products have to be relevant to the brand itself. Looking more at the design, depending on the type of business it is, depends on the aesthetics of the branding. You can use also of different techniques within the branding which are shown within these images. I have noticed that branding that is for an exhibition, seems to use much more brighter colours and a bigger range on the colour scheme, within business branding it seems to be more one accent colour along with black. I want to keep away from this as i think it will make the branding too formal, which appealing the exhibition to school age teenagers wouldn't really work. I will use a bigger range on the colour scheme and definatly orange being the main colour. Looking at these branding that use orange / red the branding really stands out and works well against black or white stock, this i think can work to my advantage and make the branding of this exhibition really vibrant and bright. The products which have been used in these sets of branding are quite different too, the branding that is based more around exhibition or creative businesses tend to include more creative products or products you wouldnt always think of, but i like this and i think i will definalty introduce some item like this amongst my branding. I really like the 'studion at akestam holst' branding, this is for an exhibition and I think you can definatly tell that by the the products and the style of the branding. The main design of this is using black, but colour is introduced through the stock which i think is an interesting way to add colour to the branding. I could incorporate this into my branding, using a bright colour stock with imagery in black and white and text in black and white could work really well in this instance and also stand out, if i could get some fluorescent orange stock or a really vibrant orange, i wouldnt have to worry about creating an orange digitally then and it printing how i want it to also.

Looking into branding further, i have looked more specific at exhibition branding and how this differs to a business branding.

Looking through this collection of braning for exhibitions, i have tried to look for branding that has used bright vibrant colours and ones which use orange, this has worked well in my favour as i can see how they have applied this colour throughout the branding and how it works on each product within the branding.
The first thing that i have noticed is that the branding products of the exhibitions is alot more fun, they don't have products which are so formal, the only real formal items are the business card and letterhead, everything else is taken from a much more light hearted aspect in my view, but thats because the products have to interact with the exhibition space and the visitors to the exhibition too.

Out of this collection I have some favourites which i am going to discuss, my main favourite is the 'Blanca branding' this is pages 22-32. I love the formats that have been used throughout the products on this bradning and how the branding has been applied to each of the products differently each time. The publications that have been created catch my eye the most, the coloured ones are great, i see these as being exhibition guides or information to an exhibit space, i think the interaction of these is really strong which the cut out logo being on them showing through the infomation on the inside, i also like the small tab on the right hand side. This holds information on what the publication is and what the content of the publication is, I think this is a creative way to show this information and means you can loose the contents on the inside, making a more visual publication for the inserts. This i could see working for my project really well. The other product that i like is the white publication that is bound together with the elastic band. Again this has the branding on it with the cut out logo. The format of this publication is what i am interested in the most, i gather that this is like the exhibition brochure, which is made up of separate publications. I am wanting to create a brochure for my exhibition and the idea of having separate publications for the exhibits work really well when you see it being collected and presented in this format, it could be interesting to use.

I also like the 'MUDE' branding. The design to me isnt that spectacular - the front of the letterheads anyway, but i really like the idea of having the pattern on the reverse, especially using the vibrant colours they have used here, the orange on these images have worked a treat and looks really nice contrasting against the black within the pattern and then the whole pattern image works well against the white stock of the front of the letterhead. I think this could be interesting to use within my project, if i used a fluorescent orange and screen printed these it could look really strong for a branding concept.
